Through a cooperative effort, the members of the Bartell-Barber Family have developed Bartell-Barber Family Investments, LLC to sponsor a small portfolio of business entities rather than simply serve as an owner-operator of one. The family’s purpose is to invest in a small portfolio of business and charitable entities whose efforts support and serve the public of the Puget Sound region.

The Bartell Drug Company has a long and successful history, which includes more than one hundred years of operation. Three generations of Bartells have headed the company, which is still privately held. The nation’s oldest drug store chain, the company has 57 retail stores, all located in Puget Sound neighborhoods. The company remains at the core of the family’s business interest and is the primary vehicle for fulfilling its business mission. It is also the source of the legacy that the family wishes to perpetuate. The Bartell Drug Company was founded by George H. Bartell Sr., a 21-year-old pharmacist from Kansas. In 1890, he purchased the Lake Washington Pharmacy at 2711 Jackson Street. His son, George H. Bartell Jr., became president of the company in 1939. Today, George D. Bartell, grandson of the founder, serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Jean (Bartell) Barber, the founder’s granddaughter, is the Vice Chairman and Treasurer of the company. Together, the Bartell Family and employee associates have built an extremely successful company, one that strives to satisfy its customers by offering them personalized service and by providing its associates a stable and rewarding work environment.
